As a general strategy, the project aims to preserve and reinforce the building’s exceptional character within the city, not only by its location, but also by the quality of its construction, the materials used, and its generous spatial and volumetric qualities.
Since its construction in 1785, and according to historical records, the building was considered an exemplary residential structure. From the mid-20th century onward, successive alterations and the removal of structural elements compromised the stability of the whole.
The intervention is grounded in a consistent reinforcement of the building’s structural and seismic integrity, adapting it to contemporary living standards. The approach takes the original Pombaline spatial logic as a framework for introducing a new programmatic layout with varied apartment typologies on each floor.
