137 Jasmim

Jasmim is located in Mouraria, a quarter of Arabic origin in Lisbon’s historical area. Mouraria’s urban fabric is dense and irregular. The streets are narrow and lead to equally irregular squares regarding outlines and inclinations of pavements. Mouraria’s urban fabric is adapted to the hill’s topography that has been rebuilding. Jasmim is set in an ancient tavern that opens to a small square and we tried to make the best use of this situation. The new owners wanted the works to be minimum regarding costs and action. We started by removing the door – the only existing space that led to the exterior – and replaced it with a higher one and more permeable to light. We removed the floor for it uncovered a hydraulic mosaic floor that was still visible. The white tiles on the walls, were maintained and duly replaced. A new counter, new displays and furniture were constructed. The lamps were produced inspired by a model brought from Northern Morocco and the street café, that did not exist, was set under a huge existing hackberry tree.
