The apartment is located in a building designed by Pardal Monteiro, situated on one of Lisbon’s main thoroughfares.
Originally, the building’s ground floor housed a 40 m² concierge’s lodge which had ceased to serve that purpose and which the building’s owners wished to refurbish.
One of the key advantages of the small flat was its proximity to a communal courtyard of the building, to which it had no direct access.
In order to make the most of the existing conditions, the main decision was to create a direct connection to the courtyard/garden.
The interior level of the flat was lowered to the level of the courtyard, gaining 1.20 metres of headroom.
The new 4.00-metre ceiling height allowed for the creation of mezzanines, and the home doubled its living space.
The apartment’s connection to the large courtyard transformed the home, enhancing it in terms of both ambient sound and natural light.
