Melgaço School

The plot defined for the intervention area has a privileged facing south location, a pronounced slope and a dense pine forest. The preservation of the pine forest determined the implantation of the building and the treetops became a protecting filter of the building and its surrounding areas. It was established that the route to school would be done mainly by walking or cycling creating continuity between the city, the fields and the school. The building establishes a direct relationship with the limits of the intervention area and in the inside there are three patios.
At the northern limit, the building’s main entrance is located. At this area with a higher level, the construction is directly set upon the existing plot. To the east the building has an additional floor that overcomes the existing slope. The remaining volume to the south is suspended over the plot leaving the interior patio area completely permeable to the exterior, the landscape and to the pine forest.
The pedestrian system that runs throughout the building is fluid and has wandering and strolling qualities. Through this proposed system the aim was create a blend of the building’s exterior and interior.
