MAGNOLIA
In 2011 the City Hall decided – due to the crises and the need of cost savings – to change the Lisbon Christmas lighting system. Seven relevant public spaces were selected in different city areas and 3 teams per space were invited to present proposals. The proposal presented to the Lisbon City Hall consisted in the intervention in the central garden of praça de Londres where a large Magnolia tree exists. The Magnolia died with the poor execution of the garden’s rehabilitation project in 2010. The intervention sought to honor the approximate 50 years of the existing Magnolia and in some way revive its splendor and vitality. It sought to breathe new life into the tree focusing on its visible part – trunk and branches – as well the invisible part of its roots.
The tree’s structure was totally recreated: treetop, trunk and roots. Its visible part was enveloped with lines of red LED lights and its roots simulated with lines of light lamps upon the existing grass.
