LUÍS VERNEY SCHOOL
The scheme focus on an existing school building compounded by three autonomous volumes: the classrooms main building, the gymnasium and cafeteria building and the workshop building.
The strategy was to convert the school main central space – assigned to the game fields – into a core informal playground area that would become a hub space to all the building flows. This proposal focus on transformation of the building compound: a switch on the circulation scheme, the building usage and above all a new relation between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The bid was to build two new volumes that are set between the existing buildings, defining a new central space assigned exclusively to a playground area. One of the new buildings will set a new school main entry, end insert a vertical circulation system, absent on the original building. The second allocates the gymnasium. A pergola, at central courtyard, works as an unifying object and connects all the buildings. This pergola granting a sheltered circulation between the different parts of the school, and allowing running new infrastructures, keeping the existing building original structure.
