CASCAIS MARKET
The proposal to restore Mercado de Cascais as a dynamic center to centralize all commercial and cultural activities was based in the following data: accessibility from the historic center, its neighbourly relationship with Parque Urbano da Ribeira das Vinhas and the future connection with the projected Metro Ligeiro de Superfície.
While the proposal was being developed it became clear that the consolidation of the Unit Mercado/ Parque was fundamental in the creation of a strong identity for the new market. Thus, the restoration of the market as a public space and its transition to the projected Parque Urbano da Ribeira das Vinhas was a key element in the proposal and intervention.
The plan to replace the open air market’s existing structure for an 80 meters long shield with an irregular width, defined by the open space between the existing large trees (plantains and cedars). This shield rounds off the west market square and is the entrance for the projected urban park to the north.
