CANTINA

The proposal’s main objective was to build a restaurant/ready made food in an unprepared ground floor and basement shop located in Telheiras, Lisbon.
The name and project were discussed with the clients in initial conversations.
The method of operation, more in the daytime, than nighttime and its informality gave us the name, CANTINA. The eating area and customer service was located in the ground floor and the technical kitchen areas and toilets were in the basement.
The intervention in the long and narrow shop (11m X 4m), was conditioned by two structural pillars positioned in the centre, which hampered the restaurant’s layout. A low central table, (9 m X 0,9 m) was used both as an eating area and customer service, reinforcing the canteen look. As it was placed in the middle of the room, it incorporated the existing pillars, part of the building structure, making them the only structural elements of the table. The hanging lamp over the table was also suspended from the pillars.
