SAL-REI

Vila de Sal-Rei, similar to the whole of Ilha da Boavista, is undergoing a rapid transformation process with the building of countless developments by international tourist agents.
Even though the new hotels, resorts and holiday apartments create new employment opportunities and improve the living standards of local population, it also radically changed the existent urban landscape dictating an unusual scale of construction.
Sal-Rei’s project was requested by a public-private partnership to replace the old deactivated open-air cinema in the main square of the Vila by a multipurpose building with a cinema, a restaurant, shops, offices and apartments. Its setting and purpose determined the design of an exceptional building.
According to the project guidelines, the building should have over five floors. Due to its scale, its volumetric shape and its urban setting, there were some important issues to be solved, namely as a prominent and isolated block with an irregular volumetric shape, it needed to be aligned with its neighboring buildings.
The introduction of openings in the façade attempts to disguise the number of floors, giving it a more domestic and informal look.
