CASA DA JUVENTUDE

The transformation of a disabled School Building into a Casa da Juventude had an initial maintenaince of the existing partitioning and the base structure of the building creating the conditions to develop a low cost project that was estimated Preliminary Programme. The functions of greater activity were located to the south, related to the enconsure’s main entrance, and to the north: the study and research areas, related with the slope and the existing tree area. The project’s main aim was the design of a system that would potentiate a complete and direct relationship between the interior and exterior building’s spaces. The interior spaces extend to the exterior and function as outdoor halls of the inside spaces to which they are associated. In the main entrance area, a new auditorium is proposed, the only addition to the existing building. With a strong presence from the outside, it is covered in polycarbonate sheets. During the evening this body functions similar to a light box that announces the auditorium’s activities programme thus granting an exceptional character to the building.
